When we were young, our parents often read us nursery rhymes(儿歌童谣). Most of them were based on true stories aiming at giving a good night sleep to the babies. As children, we probably never thought much about the words and meanings behind a nursery rhyme. Now, let’s take a close look at a nursery rhyme and see what it really means. The rhythm of the nursery rhyme always flows over my mind:

The origin of “Goosey Goosey Gander” is believed to date back to the 16th century. To escape from torture and execution(酷刑和死刑), Catholic priests(天主教司祭)were forced to hide in “Priest Holes”. These holes were very small secret rooms purposely hidden in many large houses in England. The “lady’s chamber” mentioned in the nursery rhyme was such a place. There would be secret boards in a wall that led to a corridor or stairs to a cell-like room and the gentlemen offered the priests the small rooms to hide from their enemies. However, if they were caught, both the priests and members of any family who were found hiding the priests were also executed. A five-year study of patients with leg ulcers（溃疡）has discovered that laughter excites a certain part of the body which plays a necessary part in moving blood around the body. It actually speeds recovery from leg ulcers. However, researchers are surprised to find that expensive ultrasound(超声)therapy does little to help. Traditional nursing care（看护）also helps and this human contact is likely to lead to jokes, which is how laughter therapy works. The research said: ‘Forget technology. The best cure for patients with leg ulcers is good quality nursing care and laughter!’
About 500,000 people suffer from leg ulcers in the UK. The older and larger ulcers become, the harder they are to get rid of, and therefore the search for solutions that could speed recovery has begun. Professor Andrea Nelson said, “The key to caring for this group of patients is to help blood flow back up the legs to the heart. Believe it or not, laughter can help too. This is because laughing gets a certain part of the body moving and this plays a necessary part in moving blood around the body.”
Serious leg ulcers can take six months or more to get well. Ultrasound therapy did not speed this up, but added about 200 per patient to their care bill. Earlier studies have shown laughter can help keep off heart disease. Loma Linda University in California studied men and women taking medical care for many kinds of diseases. Those, who were advised to enjoy ‘happy laughter’ in the form of 30 minutes of comedy everyday, found their stress level fell.
