A
Every day I come across lots of advice on how to be greener. Start your own vegetable来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
garden. Make biodiesel (生物柴油) in your back yard. Go out in the middle of the night and paint bike lanes on the street.
About every time I see these tips, I ask myself, "Who the hell has the time for that?” And
then I think all the ungreen things I do, like buying a book on Amazon even though I live a three –minute walk from a bookstore. Or ordering overpackaged takeout instead of cooking my own food. Flying instead of taking a train. Driving instead of walking. I would love cut back on these things, but I don't have the time. Haste, as it turns out, makes waste. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
The long hours we in the United States work -- some 300 more per year than western Europeans mean we are more likely to rely on "convenience" and disposable items, such as heavily- packaged fast foods and single -use goods. Many people had told me they were "too pressed for time even to recycle." Moreover, our long work hours allow us to produce and buy more "stuff," resulting in a greater pressure on resources and an inevitable stream of more waste. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
Europeans produce about half the air pollution, use half the energy, throw away half the
trash, and produce half the carbon dioxide per capita as Americans do. If those in Western Europe worked as many hours as Americans did, they would consume about 30 percent more energy. If Americans were to reduce their working hours to Western European levels, they could reduce their energy needs by some 20%.来源进步网www.szjjedu.com来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
What would happen if we make an effort to slow down just a little bit in an attempt to save
the planet? Would our businesses break down? Would America become a Third World nation?
Or would we find that we’re able to get by just fine? Maybe we’d have less stuff, but more
time to enjoy the company of our friends and families. More time for hobbies and exercise. More time to spend on being a citizen, not producer or a consumer. Would that be so bad?
45. According the writer, what is an ungreen thing? 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
A. Taking a bus instead of driving. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
B. Ordering a Chinese takeout instead of cooking by oneself. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
C. Growing vegetables in the garden instead of buying them in the market.
D. Buying a book in a nearby bookstore instead of on the Internet.
46. If Americans and Western Europeans worked the same hours, who would use more energy?
A. Americans. B. Western Europeans. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
C. They use the same amount of energy. D. It is not clear.
47. Which of the following is not the result of longer work hours?
A. Stronger consumption. B. Higher production.
C. Recycling of household rubbish. D. Using more disposable items.
48. Which of the following proposals would be supported by the writer?
A. A 9-hour working day. B. A 6-day work week. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
C. A 3-week annual vacation with pay. D. Higher per-hour productivity.
This is a vicious circle of overwork and consumption that we have created for ourselves.
49. What is the best title? 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
A. Lazier, greener B. Shorter work hour, more leisure
C. Longer work hour, more money D. Less consumption, less rubbish

Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup(基因构成)as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products of technological developments in the space industry! 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human being to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com

The chances are that you made up your mind about smoking a long time ago – and decided it’s not for you.
The chances are equally good that you know a lot of smokers – there are, after all about 60 millions of them, work with them, play with them, and get along with them very well. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
And finally it’s a pretty safe bet that you’re open-minded and interested in all the various issues about smokers and non-smokers—or you wouldn’t be reading this. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
And these three things make really important today. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
Because they mean that yours is the voice – not the smoker’s and not the anti-smoker’s—that will determine how much of society’s efforts should go into building walls that separate us and how much into the search for solutions that bring us together. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
For one sad result of the emphasis on building walls is the different uses of millions of dollars from scientific research on the causes and cures of diseases which, when all is said and done, still strike the nonsmoker as well as the smoker. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
One famous health organization to cite (引用) but a single instance, now spends 98 cents of every publicly- contributed dollar on “education”, much of it in anti- smoking propaganda(宣传), and only 2 cents on research.
There will always be some who want to build walls, who want to separate people from people and to a certain degree, even these may serve society. The anti-smoking wall-builders have, fairly speaking, helped to know choice more clearly. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
But our guess, and certainly our hope, is that you are among the far greater number who know that walls can’t stand long, and over the long run, we can serve society’s interests better by tolerating one another and by working together.
Whatever advantage walls may have, they can never move our society toward fundamental
solutions. People who work together on common problems, common solutions, can.
55. What is the implied meaning of the word “wall” in the passage?
A. Anti-smoking propaganda.
B. Diseases striking nonsmokers as well as smokers.
C. Rules and regulations to ban smoking 100 percent.

56. In para4, “you” refers to _________.
A. smokers B. non-smokers
C. anti-smokers D. smokers who have quitted smoking
57. Which statement is true about the money spent on education and research on smoking?
A. It is a tragic result. B. It emphasizes on building walls. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
C. It is too much on “education”. D. It is enough on research.
58. We can infer that the best way the writer suggested is ______________.
A. to build more walls between smokers and non-smokers
B. to get on well with each other
C. to spend more money on special methods to forbid smoking
D. to join those nonsmokers and anti-smokers
59. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. It’s not for you B. smokers and non-smokers来源进步网www.szjjedu.com

My classmates have different opinions on the issue. Some think that it is very convenient and cheap to shop online. Without going outside you can buy whatever you want by just clicking several computer keyboards. However, others believe that it is not safe to shop through Internet using credit cards. Nor is it possible to check the quality of the goods, because from the pictures people cannot tell whether they are good or not. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
As for me I have a preference for traditional shopping. It is really fun to go into shops and look at the goods in person. What is most exciting is that you can bargain with the owner face to face, especially when you manage to get the products at the price that you offer. Every time I go shopping with my parents, not only can I have the things that I world like to buy, but also I can enjoy the happy time to communicate with them. Besides, shopping is also a good relaxation activity, helping me reduce my stress from study. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
In conclusion, although Internet shopping is quick and convenient, traditional shopping is always my priority, for in my mind it represents a kind of lifestyle, which I shall stick with.

Hello and welcome to a Renaissance art tour of Italy. I just want to introduce the course and talk about some of the things we will be doing here in Florence during our time together. Well, as you know, this course is to develop your understanding of not only Renaissance art, but also the culture and history of this wonderful period. This course is designed to help you personally explore some of the most wonderful achievements of Renaissance art in Florence and the works of many of the city’s great artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Masaccio, Donatello, Botticelli—all in five days! While most of our time will be spent looking at the works in their original setting at the city’s museum, galleries and churches, some of our time will be spent attending lectures. Please note that all the lectures will take place here in the Harold Acton Library. After lunch we will have our first lecture, Florence and the Renaissance, with Marcello Bellini. Marcello is an expert in Florentine history and his lectures are never dull. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
A trip by automobile and especially a long trip, used to be hard work. In 1903, one adventurous man, Colonel H Nelson Jackson, decided to drive all the way across the United States, from San Francisco to New York. Nobody had dared to try this before. People predicted that Col. Jackson was going to be attacked by robbers. Co. Jackson admitted feeling nervous about his long trip, but he kept on making plans to drive to New York. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
He started driving across the country in May, and he arrived in New York sixty-three days later, in July. He didn’t happen to meet any robbers. At first he made an effort to stay on good roads, but he soon stopped trying to avoid driving over bad ones, since in most places all the roads were bad. Some people directed him wrong by accident, but one woman planned to. She told him to go down a narrow country road which ended in front of a lonely farm house after he had driven for fifty miles. An来源进步网www.szjjedu.com old farmer and his wife came out and stared at him with great curiosity. He drove back the way he had come, when he arrived at the woman’s house he demanded to know why she had given him the wrong directions. “It was to show my parents an automobile,” she explained, “They hadn’t ever seen one, and I wanted them to.”
