The 30 miles of steep roads that snake through the mountains of Logan Canyon in Utah are enough to make most drivers' hands sweat. But Andersen, a 46yearold father of four, wasn't expecting any trouble on the road last New Year's Eve, when he set off for a ski trip to the Bear River Mountains with nineyearold daughter Mia, fouryearold son Baylor, and nineyearold neighbour Kenya. Andersen had driven through the Canyon hundreds of times over the years.
The weather was fine, but the higher they drove, the more slippery the roads became. Rounding a sharp Uturn at mile marker 473, Andersen saw a truck that had skated off the road and immediately tapped his brakes. In an instant, the car was sliding at 25 miles per hour towards the shoulder of the highway, then rolling down a steep tenfoot dam towards the extremely cold Logan River. As it hit the water, the car tipped towards the passenger side, hesitated, and then rolled onto its roof and sank into the river.
There was no time to tell the kids what to do. The crash had broken a few windows, and within seconds, the upside-down car was filled with water. “It was frightening how fast we were completely underwater,” remembers Andersen, a soft-spoken product development manager. “You're thinking, is this how it's all going to end?”来源进步网www.szj jedu.com
Having lost all sense of direction, Andersen began to search the freezing water for the kids. Mia had been right next to him in the front seat; now, in the blackness, he couldn't find her. I thought,“If I don't get out, maybe none of us are going to get out.” Andersen got out of his seat belt, swam through a broken window, and, deeply and quickly, breathed air at the surface. That's when he saw a group of men, about ten in all, appear at the top of the dam. One after another, they raced down into the water. Helping onto safety all the three children, they began to shout at the father, “Who else is in the car?” Andersen says respectfully, “It_was_like_the_sight_of_angels_(天使). ”

Most of us are used to seasons. Each year, spring follows winter, which follows autumn, which follows summer, which follows spring. And winter is colder than summer. But the earth goes through temperature cycles over much longer periods than those that we experience.
Between 65,000 and 35,000 years ago, the planet was much colder than it is now. During that time the temperature also changed a lot, with periods of warming and cooling. Ice melted during the warm periods, which made sea levels rise. Water froze again during the cold periods.
A new study from Switzerland sheds light on where ice sheets melted during the ice age. It now seems that the ice melted at both ends of the earth, rather than just in either northern or southern regions. This surprised the researchers from the University of Bern.
Scientists have long assumed that most of the ice that melted was in the Northern hemisphere during the 30,000-year-long ice age. That belief was held because the North Pole is surrounded by land, while the South Pole is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. It is easier for ice sheets to grow on land. If surrounded by sea, the ice can easily just slip into the ocean instead of building up.
The researchers used a computer model to look at ways the ice could melt and how it might affect sea levels. They compared these results to evidence of how temperatures and currents actually changed during that time.
The model showed that if it was only in the northern hemisphere that ice melted there would have been a bigger effect on ocean currents and sea temperatures than what actually happened. Studies suggest that melting just in the southern hemisphere would have been impossible, too.
The only reasonable conclusion, the scientists could make, was that ice melted equally in the North and the South.
It is still a mystery as to what caused the temperature changes that caused the ice to melt. 来源进步网www.szj jedu.com
64. What does the new research from Switzerland show?
    A. The ice didn’t melt in either northern or southern regions.
    B. The ice melted at both ends of the earth.
    C. The ice melted in northern regions.
    D. The ice melted in southern regions.
65. Why were the researchers from the University of Bern surprised at the new study?
  A. Their computer model worked.
  B. The belief was held by some leading scientists.
  C. It is against the long assumed belief.
  D. Their research proved the long assumed belief was true.
66. What caused the temperature changes that caused the ice to melt?
  A. It is unknown.          B. The rising sea level.
  C. The greenhouse gases.    D. The high temperature in the Antarctic Ocean.

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition of each new skill — the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is common that parents hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, and a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters; others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness.
As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach(说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.
A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment. 来源进步网www.szj jedu.com

Most drinks stating that they are fruit-flavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission.
"Shoppers need to check the labels(标签)before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be non-existent," said Food Commission spokesperson Lan Tokelove. "Food production is highly competitive.___71 __ It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked."
Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors.Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberry-flavored products sold in stores.   72 _  Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.
_ 73    Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberry-flavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all. 来源进步网www.szj jedu.com

B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.
C. They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all.
D. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.
E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the
Products.
F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit
at all.
G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on
